Stephen Ambler

Chairman of the Board

Working for amost 30 years in England as a lawyer, chairman and managing director of large professional services businesses, Stephen has extensive commercial, strategic operational and governance experience in leading and growing businesses. 

His London law practice grew rapidly during the 1990s, operating from several offices.  Part of the business was then sold to Countrywide plc, a FTSE listed property and financial services company.  As chairman and managing director of one of Countrywide’s five divisions, Stephen grew his business to become the UK’s largest integrated residential property and legal services provider.

In 2004 he undertook a new role as chairman and managing director of a professional services business, leading it to become one of Countrywide’s major competitors.  In 2009 Stephen founded Redstone, now one of the UK’s largest wills and probate providers.    

Stephen lives in Christchurch and holds independent company directorships and advisory roles.

Scott Alman

Managing Director

Scott has been a leader in the Australasian financial services sector for more than 30 years.  He is a Consilium co-founder and has been managing director since inception.

Prior to moving to New Zealand with his family in 2009, Scott was the founder and senior partner of leading Australian firm Alman Partners, and still serves as executive chairman.

As one of the first generation of Certified Financial Planner® certificants, Scott has been a pioneer within the profession, particularly in the areas of fee for service and financial literacy.  He has received peer recognition through published articles, speaking engagements and multiple awards, most notably, the 2008 Queensland Regional Community Service Award.

Scott has a comprehensive understanding of investment markets and the role of academia in portfolio construction, gained through his long term association with leading financial economists such as Professors Eugene Fama (Booth School of Business, University of Chicago, 2013 Nobel Laureate) and Kenneth French (Tuck School of Finance, Dartmouth College).

He has been a founding member of the Asset Class Investors Group (now the Global Association of Independent Advisors), an international collective of independent wealth management businesses.  The group has a focus on research into the application of portfolio solutions, and the ongoing challenge to develop world’s best wealth management practices.

Scott is a Fellow of the Financial Planning Association of Australia, holds the Certified Financial Planner® certification and Accredited Investment Fiduciary® designation, has a Diploma of Financial Planning from RMIT University and is a member of the Institute of Directors of New Zealand.

Scott lives in Christchurch with his wife Dawn and they have three children.

Damon O'Brien

Chief Investment Officer

Damon is a CFA® charterholder.  Damon’s career path has included exposure to a boutique wealth management firm, a national advisory dealer group and a ‘fund of hedge funds’ company.  Working in these differing businesses has provided him with a unique perspective across the wider investment and advisory industry in New Zealand. 

Damon is the chair of the Consilium investment committee.

He has a B Comm. majoring in Economics and Operations Research from University of Canterbury and, after joining the wealth management industry, went on to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Personal Financial Planning) through Massey University.  As a CFA® charterholder, Damon is bound by the CFA Institute’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.

Ben Brinkerhoff

Head of Partner Firm Services

Ben has a background in wealth management. Prior to moving to New Zealand, he was Chief Operating Officer at Index Fund Advisors, an advisory firm with $2.2 billion of funds under advice.  His career has also seen him undertake the role of senior economic consultant, and economic manager for the Qatar Economic Free Zones.

Ben’s main role is to facilitate growth and improve efficiency in Consilium partner firms, and help them achieve their strategic initiatives.  He is also a member of the Consilium investment committee.  

Ben is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) and has a BA in History and Economics from University of California.

Mary Gambles

In her role at Consilium Mary integrates third party custodial platforms, financial advice processes, compliance requirements and business software to create cohesive systems that drive efficiency and improve staff productivity.

Mary graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Computing whilst working for Lincoln University as their Geographical Information Systems specialist, a role which involved tutoring, lecturing and research.

Mitchell Bristow

Investment Analyst

Mitchell returned to New Zealand after a number of years working in Hong Kong as a Quantitative Analyst and Risk Manager for funds across a broad range of investment strategies. Mitchell’s professional career has focused on financial modelling and data analysis, with significant experience in tracking, monitoring and reporting on the performance of recommended investments.

In his role at Consilium, Mitchell is an integral part of the investment committee, with a range of primary and supporting responsibilities in the areas of investment analysis, performance monitoring, supplementary fund due diligence, asset allocation and research. He is also a member of the investment committee.

Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Statistics) and a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Management Science) from the University of Canterbury.

Mitchell is a candidate in the CFA® program and is bound by the CFA Institute’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct

Dayle McDonald

Key Account Manager

At Consilium, Dayle provides support to users of Consilium Platform as well as playing a key role in the maintenance and development of the platform.  She also provides general support for advisers and administrators across multiple custodial platforms and systems.

Dayle has a Bachelor of Speech and Language Pathology from University of Canterbury with first class honours and is working towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Studies with an endorsement in personal financial planning.

Carl Richards

Carl Richards is a Certified Financial Planner™, the creator of the weekly Sketch Guy column in the New York Times and a columnist for Morningstar Advisor.

Carl has also been featured on Marketplace Money, The Leonard Lopate Show, Oprah.com and Forbes.com.  In addition, Carl has become a frequent keynote speaker at financial planning conferences and visual learning events around the world.

Through his simple sketches, Carl makes complex financial concepts easy to understand. His sketches also serve as the foundation for his two books, The One-Page Financial Plan: A Simple Way to Be Smart About Your Money and The Behavior Gap: Simple Ways to Stop Doing Dumb Things with Money (Portfolio/Penguin).

Carl’s art has appeared in several galleries in the US as well as in London, and his commissioned work is on display in businesses and educational institutions across the US.

Dr Bart Frijns

Dr. Bart Frijns is a Professor of Finance at AUT and the Director of the Auckland Centre for Financial Research.

Since obtaining his PhD in Finance from Maastricht University in 2004, Dr Frijns has undertaken empirical research on topics ranging from the impact of regulations on financial markets, to volatility dynamics and price setting behaviour.

His research has been published in leading international journals and he is a regular speaker at international finance conferences.

Dr Frijns is also a Financial Risk Manager certified by the Global Association of Risk Professionals and a Senior Affiliate of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia. 

He is a member of the Consilium Investment Committee, with a particular focus on governance, analytical support and policy review.

Jacob Wolt

Jacob has over 25 years’ experience in financial services. He is a founding partner of Bradley Nuttall, a Christchurch based independent wealth management firm with several hundred million dollars of funds under advice.  

Jacob was among the first advisers in New Zealand to be independent, use third party custody, provide fee-only advice and adopt an evidence based investment philosophy.

As a director of Consilium, he draws on his experience to consult firms on how to achieve their business objectives.

Vivecca Robinson

Business Development Manager

Vivecca has worked in the financial services industry for over 20 years.  She has been a financial adviser in both in the UK and New Zealand, and has also held the role of business development manager for a major bank, where she looked after external Authorised Financial Advisers.

Vivecca’s primary role as a Business Development Manager with Consilium is to work alongside advisers, offering support, guidance and ideas to help them simplify and grow their businesses.

Vivecca is a member of the Institute of Financial Advisers (IFA) and Professional Adviser Association (PAA), and is an IFA Canterbury branch committee member.  She is dedicated to her profession and was awarded the Investment BDM 2015 PAA Excellence Award and the IFA 2014 President’s award, both of which she is very proud to hold.

Rachael Tivers

Operations

Rachael is experienced in banking and investment management operations, servicing large institutional clients.   She has worked for a fund of hedge funds firm and, prior to that, worked in the middle office for a French custodian in London and Paris.  

At Consilium, Rachael is identifying and implementing operational strategies, managing the delivery of systems and processes.  This includes the review, development, documentation, training and support of these to drive efficiency and productivity.

Rachael has a BSc in Psychology and Education from University of Canterbury.

Lydia Luo

Lydia has experience in import/export and retail operations management in New Zealand and overseas.

 

Lydia joined Consilium’s investment team in 2017 in an analytical role, supporting the Consilium Investment Committee in the provision of quality investment solutions and related services for the advisory firms Consilium works with.

Sean Nair

Sean has a customer service background.  In his role at Consilium, Sean assists with customer service in relation to Consilium Platform, and in creating in house policies and procedures.  Sean works at Consilium on a part time basis, while continuing his studies.

He is studying towards a double degree in law and commerce (majoring in operations and supply chain management, and strategy and entrepreneurship).
